Effort to Make 1 Million Immigrants US Citizens in 2017

first_imgThe City of Miami is included among twenty-one cities and counties, several of which are sanctuary cities, that have pledged to make one million US immigrants American citizens by the end of 2017.These cities are involved in the Naturalize Now initiative. The initiative aims at preventing illegal immigrants from deportation under the Trump administration immigration policy. Although President Trump is not against legal immigration, he has promised to crack down on illegal residency in the U.S. The focus of his administration is deporting undocumented immigrants who are criminals. The other cities/counties Other municipalities in the initiative include: Atlanta, GA; Boston, MA; Cleveland, OH; Charlotte, NC; Chicago, IL; Dallas, TX; Dayton, OH; Jersey City, NJ; Knoxville, TN; Los Angeles, CA; Montgomery County, MD; Paterson, NJ; Pittsburgh, PA; New York City, NY; Salt Lake County, UT; San Francisco, CA; Seattle, CA; South Gate, CA & Tucson, AZ.Mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles and other progressive elected officials have joined in the path to citizenship effort.“We celebrate our independence on July 4, and honor the values of freedom, justice, unity, and equality that make us who we are,” Garcetti said.Stronger US laws The House of Representatives passed two immigration bills June 29, “Kate’s Law” and the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act. The bills exact harsher penalties on those who re-enter the US after being deported. They also put pressure on local governments to cooperate with feds on immigration enforcement.According to the Washington Examiner, the groups and elected officials behind the Naturalize Now initiative are tieing their campaign to patriotic American holidays like the Fourth of July.Miami, Miami-Dade County not official sanctuary cities Neither the City of Miami or Miami-Dade County are formerly designated as sanctuary cities. These cities are so designated because they offer sanctuary to undocumented residents against deportation. The mayors of Miami and Miami-Dad County are dedicating themselves to ensuring documented immigrants have access to becoming citizens by year’s end,Copyright 2017 – Caribbean National Weekly Newslast_img read more

U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris refused to blink on government shutdown deal

first_imgWhile many Democratic senators, led by Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer, (D-NY), caved Monday and agreed to re-open the federal government without a deal on DACA, (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), the senate’s only Jamaican roots lawmaker stood her ground and refused to blink from her position of ‘No DACA, No Deal.’Voted no againSen. Kamala Harris, (D-CA), whose father was born in Jamaica, voted “no” again Monday on a bill to re-open the federal government, arguing that the budget should have done more to protect 800,000 Dreamers nationally. Harris, who has been touted as a potential presidential contender in 2020, told CNN: “Our government made a promise to our Dreamers and it is long past time that we kept that promise. These are young people who are Americans in every respect except on paper. They have been waiting far too long to live securely in the only place they have ever called home.”Will continue protecting Dreamers from deportation“I refuse to put the lives of nearly 700,000 young people in the hands of someone who has repeatedly gone back on his word. I will do everything in my power to continue to protect Dreamers from deportation,” she added on Twitter. Harris pledged to continue to work with fellow senators to find a long-term solution for all “members of our military and national security priorities, funds for children’s health insurance and community health centers, resources for those recovering from disasters like the California wildfires, and guarantee for a future for young immigrants who are as American as all of us.”“We have 17 days to reach a bi-partisan agreement to protect Dreamers. We must pull together in this fight and get this done,” she added Tuesday.  The bill to re-open the government for the next three weeks, won 80 votes (to 18 against), as more than two dozen Democrats changed their votes. Senate Majority Speaker, Mitch McConnell, (R-KY), has given a “commitment” to vote on a house bill on immigration that includes legalizing DACA recipients before February 8th.last_img read more

Caribbean countries now named on US list of illicit drug producing…

first_imgAt least four Caribbean countries have been named by the United States as major illicit drug producing countries. In its 2018 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report, the State Department noted the Bahamas, Belize, Haiti and Jamaica were also described as major drug-transit countries.According to Washington, a major illicit drug producing country is one in which 1,000 hectares or more of illicit opium poppy and illicit coca is cultivated or harvested during a year; or 5,000 hectares or more of illicit cannabis is cultivated or harvested during a year.Jamaica highlightedThe report notes that Jamaica remains the largest Caribbean supplier of marijuana to the US and other Caribbean islands.“Although cocaine and synthetic drugs are not produced locally, Jamaica is a transit point for drugs trafficked from South America to North America and other international markets,” the report noted, stating that in 2016, drug production and trafficking were enabled and accompanied by organized crime, domestic and international gang activity, and police and government corruption.“Illicit drugs are also a means of exchange for illegally-trafficked firearms entering the country, exacerbating Jamaica’s security situation,” the report stated. It said drugs flow from and through Jamaica by maritime conveyance, air freight, human couriers, and private aircraft.“Marijuana and cocaine are trafficked from and through Jamaica into other Caribbean nations, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Jamaica is a transit point for cocaine moving from Central America to the United States, and some drug trafficking organizations exchange Jamaican marijuana for cocaine.”Jamaica has advantagesThe report noted factors that contribute to drug trafficking include Jamaica’s convenient geographic position as a waypoint for illicit drugs trafficked from Latin America include its lengthy, rugged, and difficult-to patrol coastline; a high volume of tourist travel and airline traffic; its status as a major transshipment hub for maritime containerized cargo,  inadequate educational and employment opportunities for at-risk youth who engage in crime, and a struggling economy that encourages marijuana cultivation in rural areas.Law enforcement authorities moderately effectiveThe report notes that while the government and law enforcement authorities are committed to combating narcotics and illicit trafficking “their efforts were only moderately effective in 2016 because of insufficient resources, corruption, an inefficient criminal justice system, and the inability of lawmakers to adopt meaningful legislation to combat corruption.“In 2015, legislation to decriminalize the possession and use of small amounts of marijuana for personal use (including religious purposes) went into effect.”Belize The State Department also named Belize as the lone CARICOM country with major sources of precursor or essential chemicals used in the production of illicit narcotics.Money launderingRegarding money laundering, Washington named all the15 member CARICOM countries “whose financial institutions engage in currency transactions involving significant amounts of proceeds from international narcotics trafficking.”But it acknowledged that the “complex nature of money laundering transactions today makes it difficult in many cases to distinguish the proceeds of narcotics trafficking from the proceeds of other serious crime. “Moreover, financial institutions engaging in transactions involving significant amounts of proceeds of other serious crime are vulnerable to narcotics-related money laundering.”Washington said this year’s list of major money laundering countries “recognizes this relationship by including all countries and other jurisdictions, whose financial institutions engage in transactions involving significant amounts of proceeds from all serious crime.”last_img read more

AgiproNews’ Italian View: Leadership tries to convince coalition of maintaining betting reforms

first_img Italian bookmakers face cruel summer as ADM sanctions shop closures July 27, 2020 Share Submit Italy’s betting market continues to grow, despite facing a number of future obstacles combined with further regulatory uncertainties under the governance of the Lega-5Star coalition government.During August, Italian betting recorded total gross-gaming-revenues (GGR) of €111 million, representing a 34% increase on corresponding 2017 results.A breakdown of August GGR figures sees growth in retail betting to €61 million (+41%), whilst licensed online betting operators recorded combined revenues of €50 million (+27%).Year-to-date, total sports betting GGR has reached €963 million, reflecting €552 million wagered in betting shops (+ 43%) and €411 million (+ 41%) wagered on authorized websites.Though betting leadership will be somewhat comforted by this growth data, it will not be reassured by Lega-5Star’s latest actions related to governing the Italian gambling sector. At present, it appears that the coalition will halt the progress of Italy revamping its operational framework for sports betting, which would have introduced new directives/requirements on cash-out functionalities and Asian handicap markets.Italian stakeholders had anticipated the operational revamp to be delivered by H2 2018, as Italy moved to expand its sports betting market with a number of new bookmaker licensees.Nevertheless, it now appears that betting leadership is back to square one, having to convince new Italian Minister of Economy Giovanni Tria that changes and reforms are wholly necessary.Anxious nerves will be further agitated by Italian Deputy PM Luigi Di Maio’s most recent verbal attack on the gambling sector, declaring ‘bad blood between the new majority and the industry’ during a Parliamentary hearing. Not holding back, Di Maio has further advised that Lega-5Star should introduce tougher legislation on bookmaker licences and slot machines allocations, set forth in Italy’s upcoming Budget review._____________Content provided by AgiproNews Italia Share CT Gaming bolsters Italian profile with The Betting Coach  August 27, 2020 TVBET passes GLI test for five live games in Malta and Italy August 25, 2020 Related Articles StumbleUponlast_img read more
