COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (CMC):Interim head coach Eldine Baptiste will oversee West Indies training for the first time today when the regional side undergoes their first practice session since arriving here Thursday. The 15-man squad will train at the Singalese Sports Club in the capital here as they begin final preparation for their two-Test series against Sri Lanka.Baptiste, a current West Indies selector, was a last-minute replacement for Phil Simmons, who was suspended for the tour following controversial comments last week that were critical of the selection process, regarding the one-day team for the Sri Lanka tour. The Antiguan Baptiste, who played 10 Tests and 43 one-day internationals, is a former Kenya coach.Despite Simmons’s late withdrawal, CMC Sports understands the Windies squad are in high spirits, especially coming off a productive training camp in Barbados last week.Fast bowler Shannon Gabriel, who missed that camp while on a two-match contract with Worcestershire in the English County Championship, has joined the squad here and is expected to bring freshness to the pace attack. The 27-year-old Gabriel played two games, taking nine wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the last game against Middlesex, which Worcestershire won by an innings and 128 runs.West Indies will face Sri Lanka President’s XI in a three-day tour match starting next Thursday before clashing with the hosts in the opening Test in Galle starting October 14.
Tiger Woods blames fatigue for Ryder Cup flop “If the No. 1 in the world is playing, that’s more than enough,” Pique said in the official presentation of Madrid as host of the Davis Cup finals for the next two years. “Rafa is very positive about this event, especially because it is taking place in Madrid.”The new event was developed in a partnership between the International Tennis Federation and the investment group Kosmos, which was founded by the Barcelona and Spain player.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSGinebra beats Meralco again to capture PBA Governors’ Cup titleSPORTSJapeth Aguilar wins 1st PBA Finals MVP award for GinebraSPORTSGolden State Warriors sign Lee to multiyear contract, bring back ChrissPique said he knows it will not be easy to have all top-ranked players participating.“This is a team event, so it’s impossible to have all the top players involved. Some teams won’t qualify, not everybody will be able to play anyway,” Pique said. “Of course we would like to have the top players, but we want to focus on the teams.” Stars such as Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have already hinted they don’t intend to play. Djokovic said the tournament could be competing with the ATP’s World Team Cup, while Federer said the revamped Davis Cup didn’t seem to be designed for him.Pique said he already didn’t expect Federer to be playing, noting the Swiss veteran has limited his tournament schedule in recent years and might not “have the legs” to play in the Davis Cup again. He said he still hoped to convince Djokovic, though.“I have a lot of confidence that we can negotiate and the top players will play,” Pique said. The new format of tennis’ top team event will be a season-ending, 18-team tournament, but teams will still play matches in February to advance to the championship in November. The Davis Cup has previously been played over four weekends throughout the year. The first championship will be held next year from Nov. 18-24 on an indoor hardcourt at the Magic Box arena, which already hosts the Madrid Masters. The ITF said players will compete for prize money that will rival what is offered in Grand Slams.ADVERTISEMENT Gov’t to employ 6,000 displaced by Taal Gretchen Barretto’s daughter Dominique graduates magna cum laude from California college Lights inside SMX hall flicker as Duterte rants vs Ayala, Pangilinan anew Nadine Lustre’s phone stolen in Brazil Don’t miss out on the latest news and information. Learn some ways in which you can prepare for and perhaps avoid getting sick at SXSW.” With Jay Goldman.Salt Lick Bar-B-QueLocated about 22 miles outside of Austin, this famous and much-loved restaurant is a favorite of many longtime SXSW attendees – and it’s well worth the drive. We suggest organizing a caravan or hitching a ride with a group that plans to go. It’s also great for those who’d like an hour or two away from the madness in the city. Here’s why. Each year, a few Music folks come to Austin early, and a few Interactive folks stay late – but those folks are few, indeed. There’s a wonderful opportunity here for our very different crowds to mingle, to make the Web better for musicians and make the experience of music better for online and mobile platforms, and it all begins with conversations. Also, even two days of SXSW Music will provide you with enough shows, parties and coincidental meetups to leave you seeing the world through rose-colored glasses for months afterward. So book another day at your hotel and scalp a wristband – you’ll never regret it.Those are our SXSW Interaction recommendations for noobs of all stripes.
