Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots. The senior had just five kills, adding 12 digs and three blocks in a sweep of Houston Baptist to open the week. Two days later she delivered a match-high 17 kills and five blocks in a win over Southeastern Louisiana, hitting .395 in the match on 38 swings. She then closed out the week with a 21-kill, 22-dig performance in a hard-fought win over Northwestern State, adding five blocks along the way. Offensive Player of the Week: Taylor Cunningham, Sam Houston State – Sr. – Middle Blocker – Huntsville, TexasCunningham, the league leader in kills, added 43 more to her total for the year, averaging 3.91 for the week and 4.75 in her final two matches. She also averaged 3.55 digs and 1.18 blocks per set while helping the Bearkats, who lead the league in opponent’s hitting percentage, hold their three opponents to just a .146 mark. Honorable Mention: Ann Hollas, Stephen F. Austin; Katelyn Mueller, Abilene Christian; Haley Tippett, Central Arkansas Cunningham helped the Bearkats (17-5, 9-1 SLC) finish out a tough stretch of six matches in 12 days with league victories over Houston Baptist, Southeastern Louisiana and Northwestern State. The Bearkats hit the road for a Thursday date at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before another conference match at Houston Baptist on Saturday. Williams continues to lead a top blocking presence that posted three victories on the week and helped the Ladyjacks (23-2, 12-0 SLC) to the most wins in the nation. The match triumphs over Central Arkansas, New Orleans and Nicholls give SFA a perfect 12-0 league mark. SFA will visit McNeese on Thursday before heading to Lamar for a Saturday tilt. Austin’s Anyia Williams are the Southland Conference Volleyball Players of the Week, the league announced Monday. All weekly awards are presented by MidSouth Bank. Defensive Player of the Week: Anyia Williams, Stephen F. Austin – So. – Middle Blocker – Cedar Hill, TexasWilliams put up three block assists Tuesday in handing Central Arkansas its first home loss of the season. The sophomore went on to help the Ladyjacks push their home-court winning streak to 13 matches with five block assists per game in wins over New Orleans and Nicholls. With the work of Williams and company, no Southland Conference team has hit .200 against SFA this season. The last Southland team to do so was Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Oct. 31, 2017. Williams has played a large part in helping SFA up its nation-leading win total to 23 matches. It was a career-high in digs for the senior and just the third 20/20 double-double by a Southland player this year. Cunningham currently ranks in the league’s top 10 in kills per set, digs per set, blocks per set and attack percentage.
