Giancarlo Stanton injury update: Yankees slugger on injured list with biceps strain

first_imgFrazier, 24, has played in 54 games for New York over the last two seasons, slashing .238/.295/.429 with four home runs. His playing time was limited in 2018 after he suffered a concussion during spring training and struggled to recover. Frazier was 7 for 49 w/ 0 HR, 8 RBI, 16K in spring training as he came back from concussion in 2018. But he told me toward the end of ST that he was comfortable with his swing and was waiting for his chance. Now Frazier has that chance.— Jack Curry (@JackCurryYES) April 1, 2019New York’s outfield depth already was stretched thin as Aaron Hicks continues to recover from a back strain that sidelined him during spring training and forced him to open the season on the 10-day IL. The Yankees open a three-game home series against the Tigers on Monday. A highly anticipated season in the Bronx is not starting as planned. The Yankees on Monday put Giancarlo Stanton on the 10-day injured list with a left biceps strain, adding potential long-term concerns on top of the short-term angst of dropping consecutive games to the Orioles over the weekend.  MORE: Watch ‘ChangeUp,’ a new MLB live whiparound show on DAZNClint Frazier has been recalled from Triple-A to take Stanton’s roster spot. Prior to tonight’s game, the @Yankees placed OF Giancarlo Stanton on the 10-day injured list with a left biceps strain and recalled OF Clint Frazier (#77) from Triple-A @swbrailriders.— Yankees PR Dept. (@YankeesPR) April 1, 2019There had been no indications prior to the announcement that Stanton was suffering from any physical ailments. He went to the plate 15 times in the season-opening three-game series against the Orioles, collecting two hits and an MLB-leading seven walks in the process. Stanton told reporters Monday afternoon he hurt himself swinging at a 3-1 pitch during his third at-bat in Sunday’s game, but thought it might be a cramp so he didn’t come out of the game. Giancarlo Stanton says his bicep strain isn’t something he can play through like he did the left hamstring last year because it will affect the quickness of his swing.— Lindsey Adler (@lindseyadler) April 1, 2019Putting him on the injured list ensures Stanton will miss more time this season than he has in the previous two years combined. He played in 158 games last season and 159 in 2017 when he won NL MVP honors with the Marlins. last_img read more

Rare elephant twins born at Pongola Game Reserve

first_imgThe elephant cow Curve with her newborn twins, yet to be named, in Pongola Game Reserve. • The Devil’s Pool: A swim at the edge of the world • So this giraffe walks into a restaurant … and the video goes viral • South Africa’s national parks • Elephants get their day • South Africa’s elephant Norms and Standards to be amendedStaff writer. Images by Malcolm Thomson, general manager of Pongola Game ReservePongola Game Reserve, a 7 200-hectare big-four game reserve in northern KwaZulu-Natal, reported the birth of African elephant twins in early December. Scientific evidence suggests that twins result from under 1% of elephant birth – making this an extremely rare event. There is even less chance of both twins surviving to adulthood.Elephant specialist Dr Ian Whyte of the Kruger National Park says the chance of African elephant twins being born may be as low as 0.5%.“Though a few cases of twinning have been reported in the Kruger National Park, an examination of the reproductive tracts of over 1 200 adult cows culled in the Kruger National Park during population control operations did not yield a single case of twins,” he says “An earlier study published by Smuts in 1975 found two sets of twins among 353 embryos examined which is a 0.5% prevalence.”In humans, the prevalence of twins can rise as high as 5% – five out of every 100 births – although the average is somewhere nearer to 3%.The as-yet unnamed twins were born to a 31-year-old elephant cow called Curve, named for the curve of one of her tusks. Before the twins she had already produced three calves, all male. The twins, at left, shelter under their mother at a watering hole.Paternity tests suggest the twins’ father to be a 44-year-old elephant bull, who died just over a year ago. (African elephant pregnancies last some 645 days – around 22 months.) The sex of the twins remains unconfirmed, as park rangers want to give them space to grow and beat the mortality odds for elephant twins.“This is the best approach,” Whyte says. “Mortality of one of the twins usually occurs as the increasing demand for milk by two calves cannot be met by the mother and the less dominant of the two calves usually cannot gain access to its share.“One rather famous matriarch in Kruger dubbed MaMerle produced a set of twins in 2002, both of which survived to post weaning age, and she then produced a second set in 2006, both of which had survived to more than a year old when she was last seen. Curve needs a stress free environment to beat the odds.”Since 2008 Pongola Game Reserve has had well-established measures to keep the elephant population stable. These include vasectomies as well as gonadotropin-releasing hormone, to ensure the number of elephants to not exceed the food resources available. With enough to sustain them, and given their safe birth, the twins have a good chance of living long and healthy lives.last_img read more

Appify: A City-by-City App Store

first_imgmarshall kirkpatrick Tags:#mobile#news#NYT#web What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … Related Posts If you live in a city of reasonable size, there are probably developers who have already built mobile applications that make it easy and fun to interact with information about the place where you live. But how do you find them?Community project DIY City has announced that it will relaunch next month as Appify.com, a directory of mobile applications organized by city. Transit info and public records like restaurant health inspections or construction permits are the low hanging fruit, but apps for finding broken parking meters and tracking local politicians have already been added to the directory.I’m lucky, I live in Portland, Oregon. Portland’s transit authority has a well-stocked app store already and the city government has officially directed its agencies to open up their data to outside developers. You may have more local apps being developed in your city than you’re aware of, though.I would love to be able to go to one web page to find new and popular locally-relevent mobile apps. Appify says its site will let you find apps around you, vote on your favorites and request new types of apps you’d like to see developers build. If you’ve built an app that’s particularly associated with a location, you can submit it to Appify now in anticipation of next month’s launch.
